Sea Lion Beach - Hanson Island, British Columbia, Canada

On a rocky beach on Hanson Island, off the northeast coast of Vancouver Island, sea lions haul themselves out of the cold Pacific to rest, bicker and soak up whatever sunshine British Columbia has to offer.

This stretch of shore is a "haul-out", a resting spot where sea lions come ashore between feeding trips, and both Steller and California sea lions use it, piling onto the rocks in noisy, jostling heaps.

Most of them are here in fall and winter, when herring and salmon draw them in. In summer many head off to breed elsewhere, so the beach is often empty. Orcas and humpback whales travel through these channels too.

Did You Know? Steller sea lions are the largest sea lions in the world. Big males can weigh up to 2,500 pounds, more than a small car.
