Hvar Marina & Pakleni Islands - Hvar, Croatia

Sailboats, ferries and water taxis pass in and out of the harbor at Hvar town, on the Croatian island of Hvar, and this camera looks across the clear Adriatic to the wooded Pakleni Islands (Pakleni otoci) just offshore.

The Pakleni Islands shelter the harbor from the south and are a protected landscape. Hvar is one of the sunniest places in Croatia, with about 2,734 hours of sunshine a year, and lavender, olives and grapes grow on the island.

Venice ruled Hvar for centuries and made it a naval base. Above the town stands the Fortica, a fortress rebuilt after a gunpowder explosion in 1579, looking down over the harbor and the islands.

Did You Know? The Hvar Theatre opened in 1612 above the town's old arsenal and is said to be the first public theatre in Europe.
