Waikīkī Beach - Honolulu, Hawaii, USA

Surfers, swimmers and paddleboarders fill the water off Waikīkī Beach in Honolulu, on Oʻahu's south shore, and this camera looks along the sand and hotels toward the famous crater of Diamond Head (Lēʻahi).

Waikīkī means "spouting fresh water" in Hawaiian, after the springs and streams that once fed wetlands here. Hawaiian royalty surfed here in the 1800s, and Duke Kahanamoku later helped make it world famous for surfing.

The wetlands were drained when the Ala Wai Canal was built between 1921 and 1928, and erosion was a constant problem, so sand was brought in from the 1920s to the 1970s, some of it shipped all the way from California, so the beach is now almost entirely man-made.

Did You Know? Diamond Head's Hawaiian name, Lēʻahi, means "tuna brow," because its ridge looks like the brow of a tuna.
