Madeira Airport - Santa Cruz, Madeira, Portugal

This camera looks over Madeira Airport, officially Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport, on the Portuguese island of Madeira, where planes land on a runway squeezed between steep hills and the Atlantic Ocean.

The airport opened on July 8, 1964, with a runway just 5,200 feet (1,600 m) long. In 2000 it was stretched to 9,124 feet (2,781 m) by building part of it out over the sea on a platform held up by 180 columns, each about 230 feet (70 m) tall.

Pilots need extra training to land here. Hills and cliffs mean there's no instrument landing system on one approach, so planes fly a visual approach with a sharp turn just before touching down, and wind shear can close the runway.

Did You Know? The airport was renamed in 2017 after Cristiano Ronaldo, the football star who was born on Madeira.
