Bear Cub Den - Noboribetsu Bear Park, Hokkaido, Japan

Inside the cub house at Noboribetsu Bear Park (のぼりべつクマ牧場), high on a mountain above one of Hokkaido's famous hot spring towns, a heap of bear cubs spends the evening wrestling, snoring and clambering in and out of their water trough.

They're Ezo brown bears, the Hokkaido subspecies of brown bear and the largest land animal in Japan, though you wouldn't guess it yet. This year's cubs were born in the middle of winter, and they're still small enough to tumble right over each other.

The stream runs through the evening and overnight, and once the lights go out the picture switches to black-and-white night vision, by which time the pile of cubs has usually gone a lot quieter.

Did You Know? Brown bear cubs are born blind and almost hairless, weighing less than a pound. That’s tiny next to adults that can grow to hundreds of pounds.
