Zambezi River - Mubala Camp, Namibia

Fishing boats and small motorboats sit moored at a wooden jetty on the Zambezi River near Katima Mulilo, in the far northeast of Namibia, where the wide, slow river forms the border with Zambia on the far bank.

This narrow finger of land was once called the Caprivi Strip, after German Chancellor Leo von Caprivi. Germany gained it from Britain in 1890 in the Heligoland-Zanzibar Treaty, hoping to use the Zambezi as a shipping route to its colony in East Africa.

The plan never worked, because farther downstream the river plunges over Victoria Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in the world, and other falls lie beyond it, so boats could never reach the Indian Ocean from here.

Did You Know? The Zambezi is about 1,600 miles (2,574 km) long, making it the fourth-longest river in Africa.
