Underwater Camera - Deerfield Beach, Florida

This camera, known as Spinner, is mounted 30 feet below the surface on a piling of the Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier in Broward County, Florida. It looks out into open water where reef fish gather around the pier structure, with visibility and fish activity changing throughout the day as light and tides shift.

The pier itself runs just under 1,000 feet into the Atlantic and draws thousands of anglers and visitors each year. The pilings act as an artificial reef, giving juvenile fish shelter and drawing larger predators in behind them, which is why structures like this consistently produce some of the most active marine footage along the Florida coast.

Regular sightings include porkfish, snapper, lookdowns, snook, sheepshead, barracuda, triggerfish and tarpon, alongside sharks and sea turtles passing through. Activity tends to peak in the hours around dawn and dusk when predatory species move in to feed.

Did You Know? Lookdowns, the flat silver fish frequently seen on this camera, have mirror-like scales that reflect polarised light in a way that makes them nearly invisible from the side in open water. Researchers studying the effect found it works as camouflage even in bright, clear conditions where most fish would be obvious.
