Underwater Pier Cam - Deerfield Beach, Florida, USA

This underwater camera sits beneath the fishing pier at Deerfield Beach, one of South Florida's favorite piers, looking out into the blue Atlantic. Over the years the pier's pilings have been covered in sponges, barnacles and soft corals, turning them into a man-made reef.

Small fish shelter among them, and bigger hunters follow close behind, so regular visitors include snapper, porkfish, sheepshead, snook, barracuda and huge silver tarpon. Sea turtles cruise past too.

Now and then a shark swims by, sometimes even a hammerhead. The water changes with the tides and the weather, from clear blue on a good day to murky green on a rough one.

Did You Know? The flat, silvery lookdown fish is a master of disguise. Its skin reflects light in a special way that makes it almost invisible from the side in open water.
