Wildlife Cam - Murrysville, Pennsylvania, USA

This camera looks across a small clearing in mixed hardwood woodland near Murrysville in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, with a feeding station on the right of frame and a fallen log running across the middle. White-tailed deer, grey squirrels, raccoons, foxes, wild turkeys and a steady rotation of songbirds move through the clearing throughout the day.

Grey squirrels are the wariest of Pennsylvania's squirrel species, quicker than fox squirrels and less vocal than red squirrels, though they give warning barks and a range of chucking calls when disturbed. Hawks, owls, foxes and tree-climbing snakes take young squirrels, but adults are rarely caught. A wild grey squirrel could in theory reach ten years or more, yet few survive beyond two or three.

Activity is heaviest in the hours after dawn and before dusk. Deer tend to appear at the quieter ends of the day, while squirrels and birds work the feeder more or less continuously through daylight hours.

Did You Know? Grey squirrels bury far more nuts than they ever return for, and the ones they forget germinate. A single squirrel can cache several thousand seeds in an autumn, which makes them one of the most effective tree-planting animals in eastern North American forests.
