Somewhere in the woods of southwestern Pennsylvania, a little clearing turns into a busy wildlife cafe. A feeder here puts out cracked corn a few times a day, and the locals know the schedule well.

White-tailed deer are the headline act. In summer the bucks are in velvet, and fawns born in late May and June follow their mothers in, still covered in spots.

The deer are most active at dawn and dusk, when they feel safest stepping out of the trees. Wild turkeys stroll through too, sometimes with a line of chicks in tow, and in between visits gray squirrels and songbirds work the ground for leftovers.

Did You Know? When a white-tailed deer senses danger, it raises its tail to flash the bright white underside. This “flag” warns other deer and helps fawns follow their mother as she runs.
