Burrowing Owl Nest - Hermiston, Oregon, USA

At ground level among dry grasses and scattered pebbles, burrowing owls stand beside their underground nest in northern Oregon. Their spotted brown feathers blend into the surrounding earth, while long legs and bright yellow eyes give these small grassland hunters a distinctive appearance above the burrow.

Near Hermiston, the former Umatilla Chemical Depot has become an important breeding area for the species. Artificial burrows have helped rebuild the local population, turning land once used to store weapons into a place where wild owls can shelter, raise young and return to breed.

Spring and summer bring nesting activity, with adults carrying food underground before young owls begin appearing at the entrance. As the breeding season ends, the site becomes quieter, reflecting the seasonal movements of northern burrowing owls and their dependence on suitable grassland habitat.

Did You Know? Young burrowing owls can make a rasping hiss resembling a rattlesnake’s warning, potentially frightening predators away from their nest.
