Wallaby Watch - GaiaZOO, Kerkrade, Netherlands

A family of yellow-footed rock-wallabies (geelvoet-rotswallaby in Dutch) bounces around their indoor home at GaiaZOO in Kerkrade, in the far south of the Netherlands. With their ringed orange tails and rusty legs, they're the most colorful of all the rock-wallabies.

Their room is built like a rocky outcrop, with sandstone ledges, log stumps and a leaning branch, because in the wild these wallabies live on cliffs and boulder piles in the dry ranges of inland Australia.

They can sit still for long spells and then suddenly go bounding from ledge to ledge, and they're at their most active around dawn, dusk and into the evening.

Did You Know? Rock-wallabies grip with their feet, not their claws. Their thick, rough foot pads work like climbing shoes, letting them bound up near-vertical rock and land on ledges barely wider than a foot.
