Giraffe Ridge - Cincinnati Zoo, Ohio, USA
Masai giraffes stroll, browse and stand watch in the outdoor yard at Giraffe Ridge, part of the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden in Ohio, where visitors on a raised deck can feed the herd by hand.
In 2026 the herd is Tessa, Zoey, Zeke and Fennessy, and Tessa, already a mother of four, was due to have her fifth calf in October. Giraffes are pregnant for about 15 months, and newborns are around 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall.
The zoo itself opened in 1875, making it the second-oldest in the United States. It was also the last home of Martha, the final passenger pigeon, whose death here in 1914 became a wake-up call for wildlife conservation.
Did You Know? In 1889 this became the first zoo in the Western Hemisphere to have a giraffe born in its care.
