Swakopmund Airport - Erongo, Namibia

This camera looks down Runway 24 at Swakopmund Airport, on Namibia's Atlantic coast, where light aircraft take off and land on gravel at the edge of the Namib Desert, often under the thick sea fog that rolls in from the ocean.

The airport has two unlit gravel runways, the longest 5,249 feet (1,600 m), and sits just 170 feet (52 m) above sea level. Several charter companies fly from here every day, and there's a maintenance base for small planes.

Swakopmund was founded in 1892 by Captain Curt von François as the main port for German South West Africa, and its streets are still lined with old German colonial buildings such as the Woermannhaus, built in 1906.

Did You Know? The cold Benguela Current brings fog to this coast on more than 180 days a year, and it's a vital source of moisture for life in the desert.
