Caesar Augustus Hotel - Anacapri, Capri, Italy
This camera is mounted at the Hotel Caesar Augustus in Anacapri, looking north-east across the Bay of Naples from a clifftop position some 300 metres above sea level. The Marina Grande harbour is visible along the eastern shore of Capri below, with boats and ferries moving constantly across the deep blue water, and the island of Ischia visible across the bay in the distance.
Capri sits at the southern entrance to the Bay of Naples and has been a destination for visitors since the Roman emperors, several of whom kept villas on the island. The Caesar Augustus hotel occupies the site of a former imperial villa and its terrace offers one of the most dramatic hotel views in Italy.
On clear days the outline of Vesuvius is visible on the mainland horizon to the north, adding an extra dimension to a view that already takes in sea, islands, cliffs, and sky in a single frame.
Did You Know? Emperor Tiberius ruled the Roman Empire almost entirely from Capri between 26 and 37 AD, governing the empire by written correspondence from his villa Villa Jovis on the island's eastern cliff. For eleven years, one of the largest empires in history was effectively administered from a small Mediterranean island.
