Dairy Goat Barn - Salem, Connecticut, USA

Inside a busy family barn in Salem, Connecticut, a herd of dairy goats eats, naps, plays and gets into mischief through the day, while the family drops in to do chores and hand out treats and plenty of scratches.

The barn doubles as a nursery. A goat pregnancy lasts about 150 days, roughly five months, and when a doe goes into labor the birth happens right here on camera, followed by wobbly newborn kids finding their feet within minutes.

Salem itself is a small, wooded town in southeastern Connecticut, formed in 1819 from parts of Colchester, Lyme and Montville. Farming was once its biggest industry, and goats like these keep a little of that tradition alive.

Did You Know? When a goat lowers its head to graze, its eyes rotate in opposite directions to keep its rectangular pupils level with the ground.
