Yunokami Onsen Station - Fukushima, Japan
Trains on the Aizu Railway pull in beside a thatched wooden station at Yunokami Onsen (湯野上温泉駅), in the mountain town of Shimogo in Fukushima Prefecture, where the little platforms sit among forested hills and the snow piles up deep in winter.
The station opened in December 1932 as Yunokami Station and later took its hot-spring name. It became part of the Aizu Railway in 1987, and today it's still staffed, with two platforms joined by a level crossing.
Its half-timbered building with a thick thatched roof looks more like an old farmhouse than a railway station, which makes it one of the most photographed little stations in the region, deep in the snowy mountains of Aizu.
Did You Know? Inside the waiting room is an irori, a traditional sunken open hearth, of the kind once found in old Japanese farmhouses.
