Andorra (Principat d’Andorra) is a tiny country high in the Pyrenees between France and Spain, covering just 181 square miles (468 km²). It is almost entirely mountains, with every part of the country above about 2,750 feet (840 m), and the capital, Andorra la Vella, is the highest capital city in Europe.
Its most famous natural landmark is the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, a remote glacial valley of meadows, lakes and old stone shepherds’ huts that became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. It covers about a tenth of the country. The highest peak, Coma Pedrosa, reaches about 9,665 feet (2,942 m) near the Spanish border.
Pyrenean chamois, called isards, graze the high slopes, while marmots whistle from the rocks and bearded vultures glide overhead. In winter the mountains turn into some of the biggest ski areas in the Pyrenees, and in summer the same slopes fill with hikers, wildflowers and grazing cattle.
Did You Know? Andorra has two heads of state at once, the President of France and the Bishop of Urgell in Spain, who share the title of co-prince.
