Costa Rica is a small Central American country between Nicaragua and Panama, with the Caribbean Sea on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. It covers just 19,730 square miles (51,100 km²), yet it holds about 5 percent of all the plant and animal species on Earth, and around a quarter of its land is protected.

Its most famous landmark is Arenal Volcano, a near-perfect cone that erupted without warning in 1968 after centuries of quiet and stayed active until 2010. Misty cloud forests at Monteverde shelter the resplendent quetzal, one of the most colorful birds in the Americas, and in 2021 the country made the sloth a national symbol.

Four kinds of monkeys live here, howler, capuchin, spider and squirrel, alongside toucans, tree frogs and jaguars. On the Caribbean coast, Tortuguero National Park is one of the most important nesting beaches for green sea turtles in the Western Hemisphere. Rescue centers care for injured and orphaned sloths before returning them to the forest.

Did You Know? Costa Rica abolished its army in 1948 and put the money toward schools and health care instead.
