The Marshall Islands is a Pacific island nation made up of 29 atolls and 5 isolated islands scattered across an enormous expanse of the central Pacific Ocean, sitting roughly halfway between Hawaii and Australia. It is one of the most remote and low-lying nations on Earth - a country of extraordinary coral atoll beauty where no land rises more than two metres above sea level, making it one of the countries most acutely vulnerable to the effects of rising sea levels and climate change.
The Bikini Atoll, one of the most historically significant and hauntingly beautiful places in the Pacific, was the site of 23 American nuclear weapons tests between 1946 and 1958 - its lagoon now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an extraordinary underwater museum of shipwrecks, coral gardens, and marine life that has reclaimed the ghostly remains of warships sunk during the tests. The capital Majuro sits on a narrow ribbon of land barely wide enough for a road in places, a compact and colourful atoll capital surrounded by the vast blue expanse of the Pacific. Explore related settings through our UNESCO Sites, Oceans & Lakes, and Remote Locations collections.
Marshallese culture is deeply tied to the ocean - traditional navigation using stick charts to read wave patterns and star positions represents one of the most sophisticated wayfinding systems ever developed by any seafaring culture on Earth. Fresh tuna, breadfruit, and coconut are dietary staples across the atolls. Browse related feeds under Nature, Beaches, and Wildlife on EarthLive.TV.
