Tuvalu is one of the smallest countries on Earth, a chain of nine coral atolls and reef islands in the South Pacific covering only about 10 square miles (26 km²) of land. Its narrow strips of white sand and coconut palms curve around wide turquoise lagoons, with the open ocean just a short walk away on the other side.
Its most famous natural landmark is the lagoon of Funafuti, the main atoll, a vast ring of water about 11 miles (18 km) long dotted with tiny islets. The highest point in the whole country is only about 15 feet (4.6 m) above sea level, making Tuvalu one of the lowest-lying nations in the world.
Green turtles nest on the quiet islets of the Funafuti Conservation Area, and black noddies, white terns and frigatebirds rest in the palms. Coral reefs teem with fish, giant clams and reef sharks. Rising seas are a serious threat, and Tuvalu is working to protect its islands and its culture for the future.
