Vanuatu is a Pacific island nation made up of 83 islands scattered across the southwestern Pacific Ocean, sitting roughly 1,750 kilometres east of Australia and 500 kilometres northeast of New Caledonia. It is one of the most culturally diverse nations on Earth relative to its size - over 100 distinct languages are spoken across its islands, giving it one of the highest concentrations of languages per capita of any country in the world.
The islands are dramatically volcanic in origin - Vanuatu sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and is home to some of the most accessible and spectacular active volcanoes on the planet. Mount Yasur on Tanna Island has been erupting almost continuously for over 800 years and is one of the few places on Earth where visitors can stand on the rim of an active volcano and watch lava bombs exploding from the crater below. The islands of Espiritu Santo and Efate offer pristine jungle interiors, crystal-clear blue holes, and wartime shipwrecks from the Second World War that have become world-renowned dive sites. Explore related settings through our Volcanoes, Oceans & Lakes and Remote Locations collections.
Vanuatu's culture is one of the most traditional and intact in the Pacific - custom villages, land diving ceremonies on Pentecost Island (the ancient precursor to bungee jumping), and a kastom way of life rooted in ancestral traditions remain living and vibrant across many of the outer islands. Fresh fish, root vegetables, laplap (a baked root vegetable pudding), and coconut crab are everyday staples across the archipelago.
