Koksijde Beach - West Flanders, Belgium

A wide sandy beach stretches along the North Sea at Koksijde-Bad, in West Flanders, Belgium, and this camera looks over the colorful beach tents, the sand and the Zeedijk promenade on the seafront.

Koksijde is home to the Hoge Blekker, the highest dune on the Flemish coast. Inland stand the ruins of Ten Duinen Abbey, where Cistercian monks lived from 1107, and the town has a museum for the painter Paul Delvaux.

In the village of Oostduinkerke, part of Koksijde, fishermen still ride into the surf on heavy horses to catch shrimp with nets, a tradition UNESCO recognized in 2013.

Did You Know? The Coast Tram runs along almost the whole Belgian coast, from De Panne near Koksijde to Knokke, and is one of the longest tram lines in the world.
