Erasmusbrug Bridge - Rotterdam, Netherlands
This camera looks out over the Erasmusbrug spanning the Nieuwe Maas river, with the Kop van Zuid skyline rising behind it and the Cruise Terminal Rotterdam visible along the southern bank. The view captures both the full sweep of the bridge's cable-stay design and the constant river traffic passing beneath it, from small ferries to large cargo vessels.
The Erasmusbrug stretches 800 metres across the river and is held by a single 139-metre steel pylon, which gives the bridge its distinctive asymmetric silhouette. The pylon's shape earned it the nickname De Zwaan, meaning The Swan, shortly after it opened in 1996.
Kop van Zuid, the district visible across the water, was a derelict port area before a major regeneration project transformed it into one of the most architecturally ambitious urban developments in the Netherlands. The cluster of glass towers behind the bridge includes some of the tallest residential buildings in the country.
Did You Know? The Erasmusbrug was briefly closed in 1996, just weeks after opening, after strong winds caused the bridge deck to vibrate so severely that it became unsafe to cross. Engineers installed additional dampers to fix the problem, a modification that is now standard practice in cable-stay bridge design globally.
