Osprey Nest - Charlo, Montana, USA

On a tall platform near Ninepipes National Wildlife Refuge in Montana's Mission Valley, a pair of ospreys raises its family with wetlands and open pasture stretching out behind the nest.

They fly in each April after wintering in Central and South America, rebuild the nest, lay their eggs and raise their chicks through spring and summer. The young fledge about seven to eight weeks after hatching.

Even then they keep coming back to be fed for weeks afterward, so the nest stays busy well into late summer. By September the family has headed south again, and the nest stays quiet until the next spring.

Did You Know? Ospreys dive feet-first into water to catch fish. They can close their nostrils as they hit the surface, and a reversible outer toe lets them grip a slippery fish with two toes in front and two behind.
