Southernmost Point Buoy - Key West, FL, USA
The Southernmost Point Buoy marks the southernmost tip of the continental United States at 24°N, just 90 miles from Cuba, and is consistently listed among the most photographed landmarks in the country. The camera streams from the Southernmost Point Bar on Duval Street, looking directly at the black, red, and yellow concrete buoy that was installed in 1983 to replace a sign that kept being stolen by tourists.
Key West sits at the end of the Overseas Highway, 160 miles south-west of Miami, and is the county seat of Monroe County, which is the southernmost county in the contiguous United States. The island measures just 6.5 kilometres long and 3 kilometres wide, with a permanent population of around 25,000 that swells significantly during the winter tourist season.
Queue times at the buoy regularly reach 20 minutes or more during peak season, making this live camera a useful way to check conditions before visiting. Ernest Hemingway lived in Key West from 1931 to 1939 and his former home, now a museum, sits just two blocks from this camera position on Whitehead Street.
Did You Know? The Southernmost Point Buoy was installed in 1983 partly because the original marker signs kept disappearing, stolen so frequently by visitors that a permanent concrete structure was the only practical solution.
