Bison Watering Hole - Grasslands National Park, Canada

Out on the Saskatchewan prairie, in Grasslands National Park (Parc national des Prairies) near the small village of Val Marie, a single watering hole draws in the biggest locals for miles around.

Plains bison are the regulars, wandering in to drink, graze and roll in the dust, while coyotes and American badgers come to drink or hunt along the edge and pronghorn roam the open grass beyond. It's remarkable that the bison are here at all.

They had been gone from this prairie for more than a century before a herd was brought back in 2005, and now they roam free across a park that protects one of the last big stretches of native grassland in Canada.

Did You Know? The dusty hollows bison roll in, called wallows, can last for decades. When it rains they fill with water and become tiny wetlands for frogs, insects and plants.
