Dutchess the Tiger - Turpentine Creek, Arkansas, USA

Dutchess the tiger lives out her days in a grassy, tree-shaded enclosure at Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, tucked into the Ozark hills near Eureka Springs, Arkansas. This isn't a zoo.

The big cats here were rescued from the exotic pet trade, roadside attractions and private owners who could no longer keep them, and they've been given a permanent home where they'll never be bred or sold.

Like most tigers, Dutchess can sleep for much of the day, and she spends plenty of it stretched out in the sun. She comes to life in the cooler hours and around feeding time, when she patrols her space or cools off with a splash in her pool.

Did You Know? The refuge began in 1991, when a breeder turned up at the Jackson family’s door with 42 big cats crammed into three cattle trailers. The family sold their belongings to buy a ranch in the Ozarks, and that ranch became Turpentine Creek.
