Taitung Airport Terminal - Taitung City, Taiwan

This camera looks over the passenger terminal at Taitung Airport (臺東機場), on Taiwan's quiet southeast coast facing the Pacific Ocean, where travelers check in, wait and head out to flights bound for Taipei and the small islands offshore.

The airport opened officially on July 1, 1981, and moved to its current site a few months later. It has a single runway 8,002 feet (2,439 m) long, and in 2014 it handled about 380,000 passengers, most of them on domestic routes.

Regular flights link Taitung with Taipei Songshan Airport, while small turboprop planes hop out over the Pacific to Green Island and Lanyu, also known as Orchid Island, home of the Indigenous Tao people.

Did You Know? Taitung Airport began in 1977 as little more than a waiting room before becoming an official airport four years later.
