Taiwan
Taiwan (臺灣) is a mountainous island off the southeast coast of mainland Asia, covering about 13,980 square miles (36,200 km²) with its smaller outlying islands. Steep, forested ranges run down its spine and drop sharply to the Pacific in the east, while wide plains, rice fields and busy cities fill the west, and coral reefs ring the southern tip.
Its most famous natural landmark is Taroko Gorge, where the Liwu River has carved a deep marble canyon through the mountains near Hualien. The highest peak is Yushan, or Jade Mountain, at 12,966 feet (3,952 m). The national bird is the Taiwan blue magpie, a bright blue bird with a long white-tipped tail.
Formosan black bears, with a white V on their chests, live in the high forests, and dolphins and whales are often seen off the east coast. Each winter, millions of purple crow butterflies gather in sheltered valleys in the south, one of only two such mass butterfly gatherings on Earth.
Did You Know? Taiwan has more than 260 mountains over 9,800 feet (3,000 m) tall, on an island smaller than the Netherlands.
