Beluga Whale Pool - Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium, Taiwan

Ghostly white and endlessly curious, belugas glide past the glass at the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium (國立海洋生物博物館) in Checheng, a short drive from Kenting at Taiwan's southern tip.

The camera looks straight into their pool, the same view visitors get at the underwater window, and the whales rarely stay still for long, swimming slow laps, rolling over and drifting right up to the glass for a closer look.

Belugas are born gray and only turn fully white as adults, so the paler they are, the older they are. They're also one of the noisiest whales in the sea, whistling, clicking and chirping so much that sailors used to call them sea canaries.

Did You Know? Belugas can turn their heads from side to side. Unlike most whales, the bones in their neck aren’t fused, so they can nod and look around.
