Also known locally as Mahameru, meaning "The Great Mountain", Semeru holds an important place in Indonesian mythology and culture. The volcano has been in a near-continuous state of eruption since 1967, regularly sending ash plumes, gas clouds, and occasional pyroclastic flows from its summit crater.
