Chesterton Porter Junction - Indiana, USA

At Porter Junction in Chesterton, Indiana, about 50 miles east of Chicago, this camera watches one of the busiest rail junctions in the Midwest, where Norfolk Southern's Chicago Line meets Amtrak's Michigan Line and CSX tracks.

More than 100 trains a day pass through, most of them Norfolk Southern freights heading in and out of Chicago, along with Amtrak trains such as the Lake Shore Limited and the Wolverine, and CPKC and CSX freights add to the mix.

Chesterton sits near the southern shore of Lake Michigan, right next to Indiana Dunes National Park, which protects about 15 miles (24 km) of shoreline and 15,349 acres of dunes, woods and wetlands. It was first protected as a national lakeshore in 1966.
