Levi Village Slope View - Kittilä, Lapland, Finland
From high on the slopes of Levi fell (Levitunturi), this camera looks out over one of Finland's best-known ski villages and a sea of Arctic forest that stretches all the way to the horizon.
Levi sits about 85 miles (140 km) north of the Arctic Circle, so the view changes dramatically through the year. Winter buries everything in snow, early summer brings the midnight sun, and in September the forest turns gold and orange in ruska, the Lapland fall.
It also lies right under the band where auroras are most common, so on clear, dark nights from late August to April the northern lights often appear over the trees, even with the village lights shining below.
Did You Know? Levi hosts World Cup slalom races every November, and the winners are given an unusual prize - a reindeer, which they get to name.
