Lake Tahoe Airport South - California, USA

This camera looks along the runway at Lake Tahoe Airport, just south of the lake in California's Sierra Nevada, where small planes and private jets come and go with snowy peaks and pine forest all around.

The airport sits 6,269 feet (1,911 m) above sea level, about three miles southwest of the city of South Lake Tahoe, which owns and runs it. Its single runway is 8,541 feet (2,603 m) long, cut through the pine forest of the Upper Truckee River valley.

Scheduled airline flights began here in 1962, but they ended in 2000 when Allegiant Air pulled out. Since then it has served only private and general aviation, including skiers and summer visitors flying in.

Did You Know? When the airport opened in 1959, its runway was just 5,900 feet (1,798 m) long, much shorter than today's.
