Dunoir - Wind River Valley, Wyoming, USA

Camera byRange↗

Big Wyoming skies stretch over the junction of Union Pass Road and US Highways 26 and 287 at Dunoir, where golden grassland rolls away toward the jagged peaks of the Absaroka Range. Clouds race across the high plains here, and the light changes the colors of the mountains through the day.

Dunoir sits in the upper Wind River valley, about 10 miles (16 km) northwest of the small town of Dubois. Elk, mule deer and pronghorn graze the open country, and bighorn sheep winter on the rocky slopes nearby. The highway climbs on from here to Togwotee Pass and then down to Grand Teton National Park.

Union Pass Road heads south into the Wind River Mountains toward Union Pass, which sits on the Continental Divide. Fur trappers and explorers used the pass in the early 1800s to cross the mountains on their way west.

Did You Know? On Three Waters Mountain near Union Pass, rain falling in one small area can flow into the Columbia, Colorado or Missouri river, ending up in the Pacific, the Gulf of California or the Gulf of Mexico.
