Volcán de Fuego - Chimaltenango, Guatemala
Puffs of ash and, at night, glowing lava burst from the summit of Volcán de Fuego in Guatemala, and this camera watches the volcano from the crater of its neighbor, Volcán de Agua, about 10 miles (15.5 km) away.
Fuego rises 12,362 feet (3,768 m) and is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, erupting on and off since 1999. To its north it's joined to Acatenango, and the pair tower over the old colonial city of Antigua.
On June 3, 2018, a huge eruption sent fast-moving pyroclastic flows down its slopes, killing at least 159 people. In March 2025 another strong eruption forced the evacuation of several nearby villages on its slopes.
Did You Know? In Kaqchikel, a Maya language, the volcano is called Chi Q'aq', meaning "where the fire is."
