Unirii Square - Cluj-Napoca, Romania
This camera looks across Piața Unirii, the central historic square of Cluj-Napoca in the heart of Transylvania, with the Gothic nave of St Michael's Church dominating the left side of the frame. The bronze equestrian statue of Matthias Corvinus stands in the centre of the square, and the ornate Baroque and Neoclassical facades of the surrounding buildings line the far side.
Cluj-Napoca is the largest city in Transylvania and one of the most significant cultural and academic centres in Romania, home to several universities and a population of around 320,000. The square has been the civic heart of the city since the medieval period, when it served as the main market place of what was then a prosperous Saxon and Hungarian trading town.
The Matthias Corvinus monument commemorates one of the square's most famous sons. Matthias I, King of Hungary and Croatia from 1458 to 1490, was born in Cluj-Napoca and is considered one of the most significant rulers in the history of central Europe. The sculptor János Fadrusz won the Grand Prix at the 1900 Paris World Exhibition for his model of the work.
Did You Know? Cluj-Napoca has one of the highest concentrations of students relative to its population of any city in Europe, with over 100,000 students enrolled across its universities. This has made it one of the fastest growing tech and startup hubs in eastern Europe over the past two decades.
