Bandar Jissah - Muscat, Oman

Rocky headlands and sheltered bays line the coast at Bandar Jissah (بندر الجصة), about 7 miles (12 km) southeast of the old town of Muscat, and this camera looks out over calm water framed by bare, rugged mountains.

The coast here is backed by the Al Hajar Mountains, which run along northern Oman, and their dry, jagged ridges drop straight into the sea, leaving small coves and beaches tucked between the cliffs.

Oman has been a seafaring nation for centuries, and its ships once sailed as far as East Africa, India and China. Sheltered bays like this one gave its sailors and fishermen safe places to anchor.

Did You Know? In 1898, Oman's sultan agreed to let France build a coaling station at Bandar Jissah, but pressure from Britain forced him to cancel the deal.
