The Temple Bar - Dublin, Ireland

Visitors stroll the cobbled streets outside the red-fronted Temple Bar pub in Dublin's Temple Bar district (Barra an Teampaill), and this camera watches the busy corner as music spills out of the pubs into the night.

The district is a network of narrow 18th-century streets on the south bank of the River Liffey. Its name is generally thought to come from the Temple family, including Sir William Temple, who built a house and gardens here in the early 1600s.

In the 1980s the area was due to be cleared for a big bus station, but protests stopped the plan. From 1991 it was restored as Dublin's cultural quarter, with galleries, theaters and the Irish Film Institute.

Did You Know? The name may also have been borrowed from London's Temple Bar, a historic gateway into the City of London.
