Wellington Intl. Airport - Wellington, New Zealand
This camera looks over Wellington International Airport, on the low Rongotai isthmus about 3.4 miles (5.5 km) southeast of the capital's center, where planes land between Wellington Harbour and Lyall Bay with green hills all around.
The airport first opened in 1929 and reopened on its current site in 1959. Its single runway is only 5,955 feet (1,815 m) long, which limits overseas flights to southeastern Australia and the South Pacific.
Landings here are famously bumpy. The Cook Strait funnels strong, gusty winds through the area, especially ahead of fronts from the northwest, so even big jets can be thrown around on approach.
Did You Know? In 2003 the airport put a giant Gollum statue outside the terminal to mark The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, and a Gollum catching a fish now hangs inside.
