Woody's Safe Haven - Texel, Netherlands

On the island of Texel, this garden cam looks in on rescued geese, chickens and other birds at Woody's Veilige Haven (Woody's Safe Haven), a calm place for animals in need to live out their days.

Their days are made up of dust baths, slow patrols of the lawn and busy feeding times, with the odd squabble over breakfast and plenty of quiet spells in between. Many rescued hens come from egg farms, where they're usually replaced after a year or two of laying, but given the chance a chicken can live for eight years or more.

Texel is the largest of the Wadden Islands, a short ferry ride from Den Helder on the North Holland mainland, and it's known for its dunes, wide beaches and open polders.

Did You Know? The Texel sheep, one of the best-known sheep breeds in the world, takes its name from this island.
