Port de Gustavia - St. Barthélemy, France

Yachts and sailboats fill the small harbor of Gustavia, the capital of St. Barthélemy (Saint-Barthélemy) in the French Caribbean, and this camera looks across the water to the red roofs and green hills that wrap around it.

France first claimed the island in 1648, but in 1784 it handed St. Barts to Sweden in exchange for trading rights in the Swedish port of Gothenburg. Sweden kept it for almost a century, until France bought it back in 1878.

The harbor was once called Le Carénage, and three forts were built to guard it. The Swedes renamed the town Gustavia in honor of their king, Gustav III, and Fort Oscar now houses the island's police.
