Naha Airport Terminal View - Okinawa, Japan

Jets pull up to the gates at Naha Airport (那覇空港) in Okinawa, and this camera looks out over the terminal apron as ground crews load bags and fuel planes at the main gateway to Japan's southern Ryukyu Islands.


The airport sits about 2.5 miles (4 km) west of Naha city hall, and it's Japan's sixth-busiest airport, handling about 21.7 million passengers in 2024. A second 8,858-foot (2,700 m) runway opened in March 2020 on reclaimed land.


It started in 1933 as Oroku Aerodrome, a Japanese Navy airfield. The United States took it over in 1945 and renamed it Naha Airport, and in 1982 control passed to Japan's Air Self-Defense Force, which still has a base here.


Did You Know? Construction of Naha's second runway began in 2014, and it was built out into the sea on an artificial island.
