Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, is a small landlocked kingdom in southern Africa, entirely surrounded by South Africa on three sides and Mozambique to the northeast. One of the last absolute monarchies in the world, it is a country of deep cultural traditions, rolling green highlands, and a warmth and authenticity that belies its modest size.
The country's landscape shifts dramatically from west to east - the highveld in the west is cool, misty, and forested, rising to over 1,800 metres, while the lowveld in the east is hot, flat, and semi-arid, home to game reserves where white rhinos, elephants, and leopards roam. Hlane Royal National Park and Mkhaya Game Reserve are among the finest small wildlife sanctuaries in southern Africa, offering intimate wildlife encounters rarely found in larger parks. Explore related settings through our Wildlife, Nature, and Parks & Recreation collections.
Swazi cuisine is rooted in its agricultural traditions - sidvudvu (pumpkin porridge), umncweba (dried meat similar to biltong), and sishwala (thick maize porridge) are everyday staples eaten across the kingdom. Eswatini is also renowned for its vibrant cultural ceremonies - the annual Umhlanga Reed Dance and Incwala kingship ceremony are among the most spectacular traditional events in all of Africa, drawing thousands of participants in elaborate traditional dress.
