Lesotho is a small landlocked kingdom entirely surrounded by South Africa - one of only three countries in the world to be completely encircled by a single nation. Known as the "Kingdom in the Sky," it sits entirely above 1,000 metres above sea level, making it the highest country on Earth by lowest point, with its Maluti and Drakensberg mountain ranges rising to over 3,400 metres and creating some of the most dramatic highland scenery in all of Africa.
The Drakensberg escarpment forms a breathtaking natural border with South Africa, its basalt cliffs and rolling highland plateaus blanketed by snow in winter and carpeted with wildflowers in summer. The Maletsunyane Falls near Semonkong plunge 192 metres into a dramatic gorge - one of the highest single-drop waterfalls in Africa and a sight of extraordinary natural power. Lesotho is also the source of the Orange River, the longest river in South Africa, which begins its journey high in the Maluti Mountains. Explore related settings through our Mountains, Waterfalls, and Scenic Views collections.
Basotho culture is deeply tied to its highland landscape - mokorotlo (the distinctive conical hat), brightly coloured blankets worn year-round as traditional dress, and a horseback culture shaped by the mountain terrain are iconic symbols of Lesotho's national identity. Papa (maize porridge) and moraba-raba (a traditional board game) are everyday fixtures of Basotho life. Browse related feeds under Nature, Remote Locations, and Ski & Snow on EarthLive.TV.
