Raspberry Island - Kodiak, Alaska, USA
This camera looks out from the deck of Raspberry Island Remote Lodge across the main operations beach on the south side of Raspberry Island, part of the Kodiak Archipelago in southwestern Alaska. The view takes in a wide gravel and sand beach at low tide, with the sheltered waters of a coastal inlet stretching away between steep hillsides covered in dry grass and spruce.
Raspberry Island sits in Shelikof Strait, separated from Kodiak Island to the east and the Alaska Peninsula to the west. The lodge operates as a remote wilderness retreat accessible only by floatplane or boat, and the surrounding waters and coastline are prime habitat for Kodiak brown bears, sea otters, Steller sea lions, and a wide range of seabirds.
The beach itself is a working part of the lodge, used for arrivals, fishing, and wildlife watching. Tidal movement here is significant, and the camera shows the beach in very different states depending on the tide, from exposed gravel flats at low water to a narrow shoreline when the tide is fully in.
Did You Know? Kodiak Island is home to the Kodiak brown bear, a subspecies that is among the largest land carnivores on earth. Adult males regularly exceed 450 kilograms, a size attributed to the island's exceptionally rich food sources, particularly the dense runs of Pacific salmon that fill the rivers each summer.
