London Bridge & City Skyline - River Thames, UK
London Bridge spans the Thames in the foreground with the full City of London skyline rising behind it - the Walkie Talkie, the Gherkin, and 22 Bishopsgate all clearly visible against the sky. The camera is mounted at the Golden Hinde on the south bank in Bankside, a full-scale reconstruction of Sir Francis Drake's sixteenth century galleon, giving the view an appropriately historic anchor point.
The stretch of river visible here is one of the most historically significant in Britain. London Bridge has stood in various forms on this spot for nearly 2,000 years, and the south bank below was the centre of Elizabethan entertainment, home to theatres, bear-baiting pits, and taverns when the north bank's stricter regulations pushed them across the water.
The skyline is particularly striking after dark when the City towers are illuminated, and river traffic moves constantly throughout the day with tourist boats, RNLI vessels, and Thames Clipper commuter services passing regularly through the frame.
Did You Know? The current London Bridge was opened in 1973 and is the fifth bridge to stand on this site. Its predecessor, the Victorian stone bridge built in 1831, was sold to an American developer in 1968 and shipped stone by stone to Lake Havasu City in Arizona, where it still stands today.
