Poole Harbour Osprey Nest - Dorset, UK
Two ospreys tend their chicks in this nest on the edge of Poole Harbour, one of the most closely watched wildlife stories in southern England. The adult female is ringed Blue CJ7 and the male Blue 022, and in 2022 they became the first ospreys to breed successfully in southern England in almost 200 years.
Ospreys were extinct as a breeding bird in England for most of the twentieth century, persisting only in small numbers in Scotland. The pair at Poole Harbour are part of a gradual southward expansion that conservationists have been working towards for decades, making each breeding season here a significant event for British wildlife recovery.
The camera is maintained by Birds of Poole Harbour and is set up on a dual HD system covering both the nest close-up and a landscape view. The nest is located near Brownsea Island in the National Trust section of Poole Harbour and is monitored and protected around the clock throughout the season.
Did You Know? Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour is where Robert Baden-Powell held his first experimental scout camp in 1907, with 20 boys from mixed social backgrounds. The camp is widely credited as the founding event of the Scout movement, which now has over 57 million members in 173 countries.
