Map of Africa Viewpoint - Wilderness, South Africa

From a grassy ridge above the town of Wilderness, on South Africa's Garden Route, this camera looks out toward the Indian Ocean as the sun rises over the sea and lights up the green hills and coastal forest below.

The viewpoint is named after the Kaaimans River, which winds through the valley below in a loop shaped like the outline of Africa, and the Outeniqua Mountains rise inland. Right across from the viewpoint is a popular paragliding launch.

Near the river mouth, a 690-foot (210 m) railway bridge opened in 1928, and for years the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe steam train crossed it on the scenic line between George and Knysna, until landslides closed the line in 2006.

Did You Know? The Kaaimans River takes its name from the leguaan, a large monitor lizard that was once found along the river.
