Mount Fuji - Fumoto View, Shizuoka, Japan

Mount Fuji (富士山) fills the sky above the open grassland at Fumoto, at the western foot of the volcano near Fujinomiya in Shizuoka, Japan, and this camera watches the mountain from dawn, when the snowy summit glows pink, to starlit nights.

The fields here sit on the high ground of the Asagiri Plateau, where the land rolls gently up toward the mountain. Just to the north lies Lake Motosu, the deepest of the Fuji Five Lakes.

At 12,388 feet (3,776 m), Fuji is Japan's highest mountain. Its official climbing season runs only in summer, from about early July to early September, when the snow has mostly melted from the trails.

Did You Know? From 2004 the view of Mount Fuji from Lake Motosu appeared on the back of Japan's 1,000-yen note, until a new design showing Hokusai's Great Wave replaced it in 2024.
