Mount Fuji Coastal View - Satta Pass, Japan

From the observation deck at Satta Pass (薩埵峠), in Shizuoka, the camera looks along the steep coast of Suruga Bay to Mount Fuji, with the Tomei Expressway, National Route 1 and the railway squeezed along the shore below.

This is one of Japan's most famous views of Fuji. Utagawa Hiroshige painted it for his woodblock series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, in the print titled Yui, Satta Pass, and it has drawn artists and travelers ever since.

The pass was a dangerous stretch of the old Tokaido road between Edo and Kyoto, where travelers had to cross steep slopes high above the sea. Hiking trails still follow those old paths from Okitsu and Yui stations.

Did You Know? Mount Fuji became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013, listed as a cultural site for its place in Japanese art and religion.
